He is an English musician, drummer, songwriter and actor
For Christmas, when he was 17, he was given a second-hand drum kit consisting of a snare drum, bass drum and a makeshift cymbal made from a rubbish bin lid
He briefly worked with British Rail before securing an apprenticeship as a machinist at a Liverpool school equipment manufacturer.
When the Beatles formed in 1960, he was a member of another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. When he left them in August 1962 to replace Pete Best.
He occasionally sang lead vocals with the group, usually for one song on each album, including “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help from My Friends”.
His turns of phrase or “Ringoisms”, such as “a hard day’s night” and “tomorrow never knows”, were used as song titles by the Beatles,
At the height of Beatle-mania he received a telephoned death threat before a show in Montreal, and resorted to positioning his cymbals vertically in an attempt to defend against would-be assassins.
After the break-up of the Beatles he started a solo career – and had two number one hits in the US: “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen”
He has featured in numerous documentaries, hosted television shows, and narrated the children’s television program Thomas & Friends
He also wrote and sang the Beatles song Octopus’s Garden
In 1999, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame
In 2011, Rolling Stone readers named him the fifth-greatest drummer of all time
As a solo artist he has released twenty studio albums and forty-six singles
His hits include: “Back Off Boogaloo”, “Photograph”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “A Hard Day’s Night” and “With a Little Help from My Friends”
