  • He was a part of London’s alternative comedy movement of the 1980s
  • He was one of the writers behind The Young Ones and Blackadder
  • He is a stand-up comedian on stage and television
  • He has also published 17 novels
  • He has also written the musicals The Beautiful Game, We Will Rock You , Tonight’s the Night and Love Never Dies (the follow-up to Phantom) and Close Up: The Twiggy Musical
  • He joined the BBC at the age of 21 and became their youngest ever scriptwriter
  • In 1985, he produced his first solo script for the BBC with his comedy series Happy Families, starring Jennifer Saunders and Adrian Edmondson
  • In partnership with Richard Curtis he wrote the Blackadder series which was a worldwide hit, winning four BAFTAs and an Emmy.
  • He had a regular slot on Saturday Live and in 2022 he hosted a revival of Friday Night Live, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Channel 4
  • He wrote and produced the sitcom The Thin Blue Line
  • In 2015, he wrote a song for The Wiggles for the Wiggle Town DVD
