She is an Irish singer, songwriter, and record producer.
Her parents divorced when she was 15 and both moved back to Ireland. She, however, insisted on remaining alone in England and lived with her best friend for a year, until she could receive Housing Benefit and move into a nearby apartment
She was inspired to become a performer after attending a Sonic Youth concert with a friend.
She concealed her singing voice, not wanting other people to know she “sounded like Elaine Paige”
At the age of 19, she moved to Sheffield, where she began going to nightclubs and was inspired by the Vivienne Westwood designs she saw at Trash (Trendy London Indie club)
She first became known in the 1990s as one half of the pop duo Moloko alongside English musician Mark Brydon
She had met Mark Brydon in 1994 at a party, using the chat-up line “Do you like my tight sweater? This became the title of their debut album.
Moloko emerged at the height of trip-hop and had a massive hit with Sing it Back – the song catapulted the group from cult party weirdos to club heavyweights
After the breakup of Moloko, she embarked on a solo career and released her debut solo album Ruby Blue to critical praise in 2005
She caused a storm in the press in recent weeks with her comments on Transgender children
In 2023 she released her sixth solo album Hit Parade and the single Freak Me Now out with Jesse Ware
Her hits include “Sing It Back”, “The Time Is Now”, “Forever More” and “Freak Me Now”
