- She studied as a speech and drama teacher by day, while singing with a band called Something Else by night at local clubs
- She has been married, and divorced, four times and has two adopted children
- She came into the public eye in an episode of the first British musical reality television series The Big Time: Pop Singer. She won a signing to EMI
- Her first two singles, Modern Girl and 9 to 5, both entered the UK Top Ten
- She has recorded 15 studio albums and released 45 singles
- She has sold over 30 million records worldwide.
- She recorded the James Bond theme For Your Eyes Only
- She has appeared in Miami Vice, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and on Broadway as Betty Rizzo in Grease.
- There were rumours that she was dating Prince but she always denied this
- She has worked with Prince, Kenny Rogers, Babyface, Patrice Rushen, and Nile Rodgers.
